Our hearts and prayers go out to the survivors and the families of those who lost loved ones in Alabama and also caused destruction and deaths in Tennessee, Mississippi, Virginia, and Georgia devastated by the 4.27.11 tornadoes. You are in our hearts and prayers. 4.27.11: IN MEMORY OF ALL THOSE WHOSE LIVES WERE LOST AND THOSE STILL REBUILDING

In memory of those lost on this day in 2011 and for those still rebuilding their lives.

In memory of those lost on this day in 2011 and for those still rebuilding their lives.

My heart goes out to those who suffered loss on this day in 2011 and to the thousands who are still trying to rebuild their lives. Praying for all those that I met on my three trips to Alabama–those working disaster relief as well as those who had experienced this horrible destruction. You are in my prayers today.

Three years ago on this day there was an outbreak of tornadoes in Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama where 316 people lost their lives. In the little town of Hackleburg, AL–population 1,500–18 people lost their lives and nearly 85% of the town was destroyed. In Tuscaloosa, AL more than 50 people lost their lives. Other towns were hit but these are the two towns that I visited in 2011. May God give His Peace to all those who experienced this in 2011. ~Mikaela

Happy We Could Help!

play mat

This time the Bartlesville, OK storage area had items needed–yay! We sent a package to Alabama for some Kiddos yesterday that included toys and shoes. What these children go through is so saddening which makes this girl smile knowing we can make a difference in their young lives. Can’t wait to hear what happens when they open up their box! ~Mikaela

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR TEAM MEMBER: KATRINA BRANNON

Katrina (in the middle) enjoying a well deserved rest after a hard week’s work with H4CM at the AL fair April 2012

Katrina Brannon joined our team in October 2011 as our Central & Southern Alabama Coordinator. She was born and raised in Birmingham, AL and now lives in Northport, AL with her husband and 10 year old daughter. She also has an older daughter who is married.

Katrina was looking for a way that we could help children with shoes. She researched and found an established nonprofit that could help us.  She contacted them and let us know what information was needed. Soon after  we were approved she received our first delivery of shoes–500 pairs! She delivered shoes to about 50 children in May of 2012 to Tuscaloosa (T-Town), AL schools who were hit hard by the 4.27.11 tornadoes and then took several deliveries to a local clothes closet.

In December of 2012 Heart 4 Children  Ministries partnered with Real Hope in Tuscaloosa on a Christmas Toy Drive. Katrina was the reason we were able to help, as she searched for an organization in T-Town that H4CM could work with to help the children who would otherwise not have a Christmas.

Katrina helped 179 children in Alabama last year, many of them through the Christmas Toy Drive. She has helped several children already this year and we’re sure that she will again do her best to help the children at Christmas who would otherwise go without toys. Please join us in recognizing Katrina for her hard work! ~ The Heart 4 Children Ministries Team

Helping: From Superstorm Sandy To Future Natural Disasters

diapers

Many times at Heart 4 Children Ministries we hear of needs in states that  we do not have an office in and that are far away from us. Can we still help? Absolutely! That is when we hope to be able to partner with another organization that is near one of our offices that will be going to help.

When Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast, especially New York City and New Jersey, we wanted to help. However, we were unable to drive there at that time nor did we have an office near there. Katrina Brannon, our Central & Southern Alabama Coordinator contacted an organization near our office in Northport, AL and got things sent to the children in hard hit Staten Island. She also contacted Lighthouse Mission located in Long Island, NY and was able to work with them by  giving them the Alabama donations given to H4CM for children that lost everything in Sandy. They then helped the needs of the children there who had been in Superstorm Sandy. Our Central & Western OK Coordinator, JJ Francais, sent 600 diapers to Lighthouse Mission for them to give out to babies that were in Sandy.

Whenever there is a natural disaster far away from us, we hope to again partner with an organization who is either on the ground or close to one of our offices that will be going there to help. ~Mikaela

Another Update From 4.12.13 Tornado Outbreak…

 damage in AL

This is one of many areas hit by the tornadoes on 4.12.13–this one is in Alabama.Shared from Eclectic Tornado Info April 27, 2011’s Facebook page: A tornado packing damaging 120 mph winds tore through areas of Notasulga damaging or destroying a total of 13 homes, a National Weather Service official confirmed Friday. (they credit the story & pic courtesy to oanow.com)

We are awaiting word to see if we will be able to help any children in this town or any of the other towns that were impacted by the tornadoes. We will keep you posted on needs. Right now for BABIES we are short on: diapers, wipes, formula, and other baby needs. If you can help please let us know. Thanks ~Mikaela

We need to replenish our toys because disasters are not planned and we want to help!

T-Town toys

These were the toys donated for the Christmas toy drive in Tuscaloosa, AL and were all handed out! We are needing to replenish new toys stock in both Oklahoma and Alabama stock!

If your child, grandchild, niece or  nephew lost all of their toys, what kind of toy or toys would they want to receive? Well then that’s the kind of toys we need in our storage areas. We’re really low on toys in both Oklahoma and  Alabama–boys and girls age newborn to age 12.

Unfortunately disasters happen–tornadoes, floods, wild fires, etc and we at Heart 4 Children Ministries want to have a good supply of toys that we can just reach in and get to the child or children who just lost theirs. This is the very first thing that we help with way before the family is asking for clothes, shoes and other items.

If you decide you want to send us one new toy or more, the address is up at the end of this post. Checks, gift cards and PayPal gifts are always welcome. Sealed Our 4 locations are below.

Game Drive

Note from the Head Banana: Deborah is our Kid’s Assessment Manager for Jefferson, Walker and Winston Counties in Alabama

We are having a game drive for children who have been touched by natural disasters. My children, Cassia and Deja are working with their friends to get donations because these are games and who better to find children’s games than children?

If you have games collecting dust please bring them to our drop off point, Tech Electronics
located at 5091 Hwy 78 East, Jasper Alabama 35501 or you may mail them via media
mail for very little.  I will also be doing a coat drive with the same drop off point so if you
have games AND coats you will be a blessing to these children. Feel free to share this so
we may bring some joy to those impacted by the hurricane and other natural disasters.
Thank you!
Deborah
